This herb is a common weed found in most parts of India in the fields of cotton, maize, paddy rice, coffee, banana plantations, gardens and on waste grounds. 
It grows in wet soils.








It can grow to 12-24 inches to height and blooms with many yellow flowers.


The whole plants and aerial parts are used for many remedies, mostly biliary and urinary.
It is known as Stone Breaker or Shatter stone.


Keelanelli is very effective in treating viral infection of the liver, specifically hepatitis B.
It is anti-hepato-toxic, anti-lithic and anti -hypertensive.


Useful in the treatment of kidney and gallbladder stones, colds flu, tuberculosis and other
Viral infections,

It has also been proven effective in other liver diseases like jaundice and liver cancer.

This karpooravalli plant leaves are carried with the aroma of camphor. So it is known as Karpooravalli. This plant is grown in home garden for the treatment of children and infants  for coughs and cold. This plant leaves are used by the people for a very long time. Almost everybody knows  this medicinal value of these leaves.
This plant is much fleshy, branched,  highly aromatic, juicy and pubescent herb. It is called as Omavalli in Malayalam and Ajwain in HIndi and Country Borage in English. 

Medicinal properties:

  • It is stimulant, expectorant and diaphoretic.
  • Juice of fresh leaves is used for urticaria and allergic problems.

It also helps to cure dandruff too. Crush the leaves until juice come out. then boil with water for 5 to 10 minutes and the cooled water may be used for final rinsing of the hair after shampoo wash.

It is of nutritional values also. You can prepare thuvaial or chutney by roasting the leaves with onions, gram dal, garlic , tamarind, coconut grates, red chillies and salt and total ingredients grounded in a mixie and eat with hot rice and ghee.

You can prepare bajji also using these leaves.

We should grow this herb in our home garden or in pots so that we can use this herbal medicine as a domestic remedy whenever we suffer with cold, cough head ache, boils, etc. No need to go to medical treatments which has side effects.

Ammaan Pacharisi is a small herb found in the banks of the river, lake sides and in garden and Paddy fields. During rainy season, it grows abundantly. This herb is widely known as snake weed or asthma weed by siddha experts. Due care should be exercised to identify this herb. In gardens the Ammaan Paccharisi plants are grown as weeds. They are removed by the farmers unknowingly its medicinal values.

This herb is called and recognized by Siddha Saints as ' VELLIPASHPAM.'
Curative properties and home remedies:

  • Pluck the fresh young leaves of this plants and wash them. Cut into pieces and saute in ghee and cook with green dal or urid dal as keerai kootu. It is tasty and of high medicinal use for mouth ulcers and stomach ulcers and chapped lips.
  • The leaves saute with gingelly oil or ghee and prepare as chutney and intake of this chutney with rice will cure constipation and make slow down the body temperature.
  • The fine paste of this leaves can be taken mixed with the buttermilk, in the empty stomach in the morning daily for a week will cure the white discharge of women.
  • The flowers of this plant are collected and ground to a fine paste and mixed in the milk and daily intake of this mixed milk in the morning for a week will induce secretion of milk. This is an excellent home remedy for lactating mothers.
  • Application of the paste of the leaves will cure the boils and swellings quickly.
  • Application of the milk secreted by the plant when pluck the leaves or cut the stem over the warts and it will fall off withing couple of four days.
  • It helps to build up stamina too
  • Its milk is applied around the nail suffered with nail bed infection called as Paronychia. In Tamil this infection is called as Negachuthi. It cures this infection and swelling.
  • In school-hood age, the village children do a magic with this milk. They draw a sketch with this milk in this paper and show the drawing to their elder parents or friends. When they told them that no drawing in the paper. The children heat under the bottom of the drawing paper, the clear sketch will appear on the paper.

In Our Tamil Nadu, Betal leaves and nuts are served to our guests for courtesy. The leaves are heart shaped shining and long stalked . Since ancient times,the betal leaves are used as offering to HIndu Gods during Poojas and festivals.
After finishing the feast, the guests are served with betal leaves and nuts as a formality. In wedding and engagement, betal leaves takes a primary role in the ceremonies of Hindu families of India.
These leaves are having aromatic stimulant and antiflatulent. 
The medicinal benefits of the Betal leaves are amazing. They are as follows:



  • Betal leaves are good for oral health. It reduces mouth odour, whitens teeth and reduces bleeding.
  • When the leaves chewed, the betal leaves induces salivation. Saliva fights with bacteria and helps to reduce plaque formation on teeth. Recent rearches have shown that the leaf contains chavicol which has powerful antiseptic properties.

Bermuda grass is called as " Arugampul"

This grass has deep roots and we cannot eradicate completely. If we cut, it grows again. 
It has abundant medicinal values.

  • For long dated skin disease , take a handful of Bermuda grass and a small piece of turmeric and grind into a smooth paste and apply this mixture in that area. It will do wonders within 48 day

  • To get rid of body weakness and body heat , take a mixture of Bermuda grass and cow's butter for 20 to 48 days. your face too will glow.

  • good for diabetic patients too. Drink arugampul juice daily in the morning in the empty stomach. Your sugar level will reduce.

  • Take Bermuda grass or arugampul one handful cleaned and black pepper one tablespoon. smash in a manual grinder add gingelly oil and keep in sunlight for five days. Apply this oil in the scalp. eye diseases if any, will be cured and body heat will come down.

  • Take a a handful of Bermuda grass and keezhanelli (Phyllanthus niruri and add curd to it. Have this mixture in empty stomach.  This is the best remedy to the white discharge of women.

  • Take Bermuda grass and pomegranate leaves and boil in water and drink. This is the good treatment to piles,  nose and ear defects.

  • Its juice purifies blood and flush out the toxins of the body.

BASIL (TULSI) (BOTANICAL NAME:OSCIMUM BASILICUM)



The basil plant is called as the Holy Tulsi .


This plant finds its place in every Hindu homes and grown in the temple of Perumal. 
Root, stem, seeds and leaves of this plant are of medicinal value.

There are two varieties of tulsi namely Vishnu tulsi aand Ramar tulsi. Out of thesee, Vishnu Tulsi leaves are widely preferred in treatment. It has a peculiar rich aroma emanating when we rub the leaves and roots.
  • The leaves and seeds contain an aromatic oil and used as the mosquito repellent.
  • The juice of the leaves are well known home remedy
  • The powder of black pepper mixed with the juice of the basil leaves is the best dose for Malarial fever
  • 100 gms of fresh Tulsi leaves contain 175% of the daily needed doses of vitamin A. Vitamin A is known to have antioxidant properties and is essential for clear vision. It is also required for maintaining healthy mucus membranes and skin and protect from lung and oral cavity cancers.
  • Basil leaves contain health benefiting essential oils such as eugenol, citronellol, linalool, citral, limonene and terpineol. These compounds are having anti inflammatory  and anti- bacterial properties.

Turmeric contains wide range of antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal , anticarcinogenic, antimutagenic and anti inflammatory properties.   Turmeric is also loaded with nutrients too. It is used for treatment of wide variety of health problems .
Turmeric can prevent Prostate cancer, stop the growth of the already existing prostate cancer and delete the cancer cells too. It acts a the best protector against radiation induced tumors.  It also prevents the growth of tumor cells such as T-Cell leukemia , colon carcinomas and breast carcinoma.
