MARUTHANI (BOTANICAL NAME: LAWSONIA INERMIS LINN)










The plant maruthaani is called as Mehendi and Henna in Hindi. It is admired and used as a symbol of prosperity, fertility and happiness of women and girls. It is appreciated and used by the girls and all women during wedding and other social ceremonies like wedding betrothal and nalungu and other matrimonial rituals. They decorate their hands and nails with the paste of henna.

Henna is used as a synthetic dye also for various arts and prints from the very ancient period.








It grows through out India. It may be grown as a shrub or tree. multi-branched with spine tipped branch-lets. The leaves opposite to each other. Henna flowers are having four sepals and  calyx tube with spread lobes. Its petals are obvate with white  or red stamens. and flowers are fragrant. Henna fruits are small brownish round capsules.

Henna is known to be an excellent cooling agent and hence its is applied to scrapes and burns. It is used to lower down the body temperature while the patient suffers high temperature of fever. 

Henna is also known to be effective in treating cracked nails. This is the treatment by home remedy. Soaking the henna leaves in the drinking water overnight and consuming the water with henna leaves for ten days will give excellent results. 

The paste of henna leaves and butter will treat the pus and swelling and scabies of the nail bed.

Another best use of this henna leaves is a best hair conditioner. It acts as a natural remedy for the hair loss and maintains hair quality. It repairs the hair cuticle and prevents the breakage of hair tip and maintains hair shine. It prevents hair fall and premature grey hair. Endowed with protective and restorative powers it has the ability to bring back the health of the hair and prevents damage and keeps the hair as soft and silky. It is also acts as an anti dandruff agent.

The paste of raw henna leaves of one cup is added with 100 gms of coconut oil and allow it to boil in low medium temperature and the essence poured in the oil and makes greenish hair oil You can apply this oil and massage the scalp. It enhances the growth of thick hairs and prevent premature grey hair. 




The powder of the bark of the henna plant is to be consumed 1 to 5 decigrams every day for 10 days will treat with jaundice and enlargement of liver. 

The henna leaves are used to cure vitiligo ( pale patches on the skin where pigment is lost.)

Since the henna plant is a coolant, the application of the henna paste treats the prickly heat.

The paste of flowers of henna in vinegar will treat the headache.

The paste of henna leaves is applied to the feets burning.
The henna oil extracted from the flowers of henna used in perfumery.
The extract of henna leaves packed with the power of hypoglycaemic and hypolipidemic actvities. So it is a best home remedy to control diabetes.
Henna ectract control the T.B bacterias  such asTubercke bacilli and Mycobaterium tuberculosis.

The henna is used as an astringent, anti-hemorrhagic intestinal anti-neoplastic, cardio-inhibitory, hypotensive, and a sedative. The Henna extracts exihibit antibacterial, antifungal, and ultraviolet light screening activity. It treats leprosy too.

The oil of its flower relieves muscular pains, while its seeds are used in deodorants and to regulate menstruation. Henna oil induce sleep, cure headaches and bruises.
 The bark is also used to treat symptoms of jaundice and enlargement of the liver and spleen. 
Henna oil can be applied to the skin to treat eczema, scabies, fungal infections and burns.





The flowers of Henna plant can be collected and kept under the pillow. It stimulates sound sleep.
