OMAM (BOTANICAL NAME: TRACHYSPERMUM AMMI)

             Omam in Tamil . In Hindi :Ajwain. Sanskrit Yamini. In English, Carom seeds or Bishop seeds






Carom plant is a small, erect, annual shrub with soft fine hairs. It has branches, feather like leaves, with rays of flowers each head bearing 6 to 15 flowers.. The fruits are very small, Grey or light green colour or brown colour. It is slightly pungent and bitter. It is prolonged use traditionally. very popular  and used in cooking and medicinal world..





Carom seeds consists of moisture, protein, fat, minerals, fibers, carbohydrates, calcium, phosphorous, iron carotene, thiamin, riboflavin and niacin. It has most important and essential oil called  Thymol which is strongly antiseptic, antispasmodic, digestive, diuretic and expectorant.

Carom seeds have abundant medicinal values in Siddha medical world. And It has widely used as natural home remedy by our ancestors for a very longtime ago onwards. Let us take a look on its uses 




Mixture of one tablespoon of carom seeds and coriander seeds, cumin seeds and ginger grates in a boiled water and allow it to concentrate into a thick decoction and daily consumption of this tea will cure all digestive problems.

Used to get rid of the constipation.

Carom seeds have been proven for curing tooth ache, It will chase the tooth ache, decay and bad odour, Thus oral hygiene is maintained.

It takes part in curing kidney stones, They can be used to treat with kidney disorders and its related pain.

Boil the carom seeds in water with Palm sugar. This decoction gives instant relief from cold and cough and acts smartly on the treatment of bronchitis and asthma.
This seed can be boiled in the water and  inhale the steam aroma emanating out of the mixture for the treatment of blocked nose.
It is also useful for the treatment of itches, boils and eczema
Oma water or carom seeds to be ground as a paste and mixed with water boiled or warm water and if you consume it in the morning daily  for the treatment of excessive bleeding and to regulate menstruation cycle and cramps.
It treats smartly on the arthritis joint pain and spasms.
Add one teaspoonful of fennel seeds and one teaspoonful of carom seeds and allow to boil for 6 minutes and cool it. Consume this frequently to cleanse the uterus and increase milk production.
It is a muscle relaxant also.
It is useful for the treatment of all gas related problems like belching.
The herb is useful for the people who want to get rid of alcohol craving. chew carom seeds daily for this defect.
It is useful to treat the insect bites.
Drink half cup of water with soaked carom seeds on an empty stomach every morning, It reduces the weight for about 4 to 5 kg within a month so,
 It is a weight loser also.
Take 50 gms of black sesame seeds, 25 gms of carom seeds and 100 gms of palm sugar. Grind them together. Consume this mixture one teaspoonful twice daily. This remedy will help in treating frequent urination and bed wetting.
To get rid of ear pain, caused by boils, roast the carom seeds 2 teaspoonful and garlic three and four pulses in gingelly oil till they become red in colour, Cool it and strain it, This is to be stored, Put two three drops of this oil will cure the boils and pain in ears.
It treats the Flatulence. 
It reduces joint pain.
To get rid of grey-hair : 

Curry leaves 5 to 6
dry grapes  4 or 5
carom seeds one spoon
palm sugar as per your taste .

Boil these above ingredients and allow them to cook well. and drink this mixture daily to drive out the grey hair.

These are the excellent uses of carom seeds. They cannot be stored for a long time. Put them in a airtight container to protect from humidity.
