           KARPOORAVALLI (BOTANICAL NAME: COLEUS AMBONICUS)
This karpooravalli plant leaves are carried with the aroma of camphor. So it is known as Karpooravalli. This plant is grown in home garden for the treatment of children and infants  for coughs and cold. This plant leaves are used by the people for a very long time. Almost everybody knows  this medicinal value of these leaves.
This plant is much fleshy, branched,  highly aromatic, juicy and pubescent herb. It is called as Omavalli in Malayalam and Ajwain in HIndi and Country Borage in English. 

Medicinal properties:

  • It is stimulant, expectorant and diaphoretic.
  • Juice of fresh leaves is used for urticaria and allergic problems.
  • It soothesthe muscles of the uterus and the intestines.
  • It also plays a vital role in muscle relaxation.
  • The leaves is consisting of the elements glucosides, luteolin and apigenin.
  • An excellent home remedy for coughs and cold.
  • It induces absorption of nutrients.
  • Aids in digestion.
  • Helps to regulate female menstruation cycle.
  • Prevents gas formation.
  • eliminates the toxins from the body.
  • Helps to regenerate new cells and tissues in the body.
  • It purifies blood.
The leaves are used to treat with bee stings.


Chew Crush the leaves and apply over the area of bee stings or any other insect bites and some skin complaints, It works smart and cures the inflammation and pain and injuries.

The juice of the leaves mixed with gingelly oil and heat the mixture till the water evaporates. This oil in warm temperature may be used for coughs and apply on the head .

Chew and eat the two or three raw leaves for the treatment of sore throat at one time. cough or cold. you can prepare the decoction with the crush pieces of the leaves with honey This intake will also soothes the throat.

If your nose blocked with severe cold, Simply rub the leaves and inhale the hot aroma emanated from the leaves. This is a quick home remedy.

It also helps to cure dandruff too. Crush the leaves until juice come out. then boil with water for 5 to 10 minutes and the cooled water may be used for final rinsing of the hair after shampoo wash.

It is of nutritional values also. You can prepare thuvaial or chutney by roasting the leaves with onions, gram dal, garlic , tamarind, coconut grates, red chillies and salt and total ingredients grounded in a mixie and eat with hot rice and ghee.

You can prepare bajji also using these leaves.

We should grow this herb in our home garden or in pots so that we can use this herbal medicine as a domestic remedy whenever we suffer with cold, cough head ache, boils, etc. No need to go to medical treatments which has side effects.
